和良川 (Wara River)

2008年（平成20年）、「平成の名水百選」に選定された和良川は和良の中心部を通り、木曽川に注ぎ込みます。石灰岩地帯に位置しているため、雨や支流が和良を通り抜ける間に炭酸カルシウムなどを吸収し、和良川はミネラル分豊富な川となります。その豊かな和良川が和良鮎、ほたる、はざこなどの多様な生命を育みます。
 
We treasure our natural environment at our village. Wara River nurtures a rich variety of wildlife.  Among others,  “Ayu”or sweetfish, giant salamanders, and fireflies are the three most popular creatures you can enjoy watching along the Wara River.  
 

 
 
 
 

和良鮎 (Wara Ayu/ sweetfish)

昭和の時代にダムが建設される前までは下流域から和良川へ遡上する天然鮎がいましたが、現在は琵琶湖産などの稚鮎が計画放流されています。放流された稚鮎は和良川の良質で豊富な藻類を食べ、日本一の鮎へと成長します。地域ブランドともなった和良鮎は「清流めぐり利き鮎会」にて全国唯一となる４回のグランプリに輝くなど、その味と香りは格別です。和良鮎を守る会はこちら
 
Ayu or sweetfish grown and caught in Wara River are called ”Wara Ayu” and are certified as a local brand since 2015. Wara Ayu have won the grand prize four times in the past at the Japan’s biggest Ayu tasting competition. When you visit our village in the summer, you may not want to miss a chance of tasting its flavor and aroma of Wara Ayu. 
 

ほたる (Fireflies)

夏になると、ヒメボタル、ゲンジボタルが乱舞する姿を楽しむことができます。環境汚染の生物指標となるゲンジボタルは幼虫の期間は河川のなかでカワニナを食べて成長します。このカワニナは清流域にしか生息しないため、環境条件が良好な河川でのみゲンジボタルを楽しむことができます。豊かな自然が残っている和良だからこそ楽しむことができるほたる。これからも大事していきたい和良の宝です。
 
When you visit Wara in the early summer, you may have a chance to enjoy watching fireflies at night. Fireflies could only survive in the clean environment where their feeds, black snails live. 
 
 

 
 
 
 

はざこ (Giant Salamander)

和良ではオオサンショウウオのことを「はざこ」と言います。「ハンザキ」が変化した名前ですが、「ハンザキ」は体を半分に裂いても死なないほどの再生力があるということに由来します。3千万年前の化石と今の姿がほとんど変わっていないため「生きた化石」とも形容される「はざこ」は堤防建設などにより生息地が破壊され、生息数が減少。1952年に国の特別天然記念物に指定されました。この希少なはざこは今後も守っていきたい和良の宝です。
 
Giant salamander is called “Hazako” in Wara. The name comes from a Japanese word,  “Hanzaki”, which means to rip in half  in English. As the name shows, Giant salamander or Hazako has been believed that they could continue to survive  even if they are ripped in half. Because of the decrease of its number, Hazoko was designated as a special natural monument in 1952, and is now federally protected.
